Jacquelyn Dohoney

Who is Jacquelyn?

November 29, 2021

Hello, and welcome to my blog! If you’re here, that means you actually want to read my ramblings, so on the advice of my lawyer, I’m going to have to have you sign a release form stating that you are here of your own free will… Just kidding!

But seriously, thank you for coming! First, let me introduce myself for those of you that don’t know me! My name is Jacquelyn Dohoney, Jackie for short, or Shorty if you’re feeling really sassy.

Of course, we have the obligatory “About Me” introductions, so here’s a few for you:

I have not had a drop of alcohol since July 5, 2009. At least not for drinking purposes. I do cook with it. Because my famous corned beef and cabbage just wouldn’t be the same without a proper pot of Guinness! As far as sobriety though, 12 years going strong! (12 years is a long time, and one day we’ll talk about it!) Think of someone going from Shameless to The Good Place!

Favorite color: Purple. Or is it black? No definitely purple…

I’m a multi-genre writer, currently having the most fun with thrillers. But I’ve also tried my hand at urban fantasy and horror! Have I done any other writing? Of course! I wrote my Bachelor's thesis on "Violent Sexual Homicide" and my Master's thesis on "The Effect That Chemical Blood Enhancements Have on DNA". I know, weird, right? I also received first place three out of four years for a children's book writing competition in grade school. (That was a VERY long time ago!)

I am married with two kids. No, not Married with Children, although that was a fantastic show!

We are an animal friendly household, and live on a hobby farm to prove it. I raise chickens and am a small time Ayam Cemani hybrid breeder. We also have 6 Nigerian dwarf goats, 2 dobermans, 1 wiener dog, 1 ch-wiener, 3 parrots, and 2 high maintenance cats.

My top 3 favorite books: Neverwhere, The Stand, and Swan Song

I’m a tried and true horror nerd. In fact, some of my best writing and highest word counts have come to me while watching a Tremors or Friday the 13th marathon! I always watch horror movies to help me focus on my writing!

I travel, as much as possible. If I had my druthers, it would always be by motorcycle. I like to call myself a professional passenger. I’ve put over 50,000 miles on our bikes in the last ten years, in multiple countries. One of the coolest trips we did was going from Phoenix to Belize and back in a month. Sound crazy? Try it!

What am I reading right now?: Let’s be honest. As writers, our tastes change like we change our underwear. At least, one would hope there’s some underwear changing. I read a lot, and I write more. While this list is by no means a comprehensive list of everything I’ve ever read, because I couldn’t possibly remember, you can keep up with what I’m reading on my Good Reads.

When I’m not writing, what do I do with my life? If you’re in the Salt Lake City area, you can find myself, my husband, and one of our sons at Big Deluxe Tattoo on State Street! Our studio has been around for 23 years! One of these days I’ll do a post about owning a tattoo studio, but if you ever have the urge, you can check us out on Instagram or on the good old Inter-web at Big Deluxe Tattoo.

What exactly makes me qualified to be a writer?: Honestly? Nothing. At least, besides the fact that I put pen to paper (or fingertips to keyboard) on a regular basis. I don’t have an MFA. But I do have an AS in Forensic Science, a BS in Criminal Justice, and an MS in Forensic Science. In my brief career in forensics, I learned a lot, and that gives me plenty of fodder for my novels!

And finally, one of the most important things. I don’t talk about politics or hot button issues on any of my social media. Not to knock anyone that does, it’s just not for me. I have a hard enough time with being ADHD and an anxiety riddled mess to add that kind of negativity to my life. What I will say, is your politics don’t matter to me, and neither does your race, sexuality, religion, or career of choice. I’m in this for the writing and all the wonderful friends I've made along the way!

With that being said, if you’re still reading this, that means I haven’t lost you. Congrats! You made it through my first blog post! Thanks for joining me, and I’m so looking forward to getting to know all of you! Stay tuned for updates to my blog and current projects, and my attempts to wade through the querying trenches to find an agent!

With love,

Jackie
